We are like

a puff of wind;

our days are like

a passing shadow.

--Psalm 144:4

KEEPING A HOLY LENT
The beautiful words of the Book of Common Prayer invite us, on Ash Wednesday, into the annual Lenten season of self-reflection:

“Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting.”
(
Book of Common Prayer, p. 264)
We Sisters strive to deepen our prayer lives during these forty days before Easter, and we exhort you to do the same. This year, Ash Wednesday occurs on March 5. Below are some Lenten resources to help you grow closer to God in this time of simplicity.
Walking the Way of the Cross, also known as walking the Stations of the Cross, is an ancient devotional practice which can deepen the experience of Lent and Holy Week. Some congregations (Including the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in NYC) walk the Stations every Friday in Lent. If you are unable to walk in person, you may “virtually” walk our 14 Stations of the Cross in the Convent Main Chapel by CLICKING HERE for our Way of the Cross booklet.
If you would like to walk the Stations in person with us, please join us on Good Friday, April 18, as we walk and pray in the natural surroundings of the CSJB Convent. Good Friday is a day of silence and fasting for the Sisters as we remember Christ's sacrifice for us.

Please email Sister Monica Clare at [email protected] if you would like to participate.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD HOME IN CAMEROON, WEST AFRICA

Wall building at the Good Shepherd Home

Children at the Good Shepherd Home
Many thanks to our generous donors who made it possible to build a security wall around the Good Shepherd Home. The wall is looking great and is now nearly finished. The staff, Sisters, and children are grateful for this much-needed protection as Cameroon struggles through the violence and instability of the Cameroonian Civil War, which has been raging for over eight years.

The Good Shepherd Home has been providing orphaned children with food, shelter, a solid spiritual life, and a loving family since it was founded by Mother Jane Mankaa in 2003. The Home has its own chicken farm, bakery, pig farm, vegetable farm, and fishery so that it can remain self-sufficient. It also relies on donations from our generous supporters.

Thank you for making the Good Shepherd Home security wall a reality!
We are currently looking for new donors, as our monthly fund often runs low. If you’d like to help give these children food, clothing, school fees, medical care, and other vital services, please email our Business Manager Darren Somerville at [email protected]  A sponsorship of the Home costs as little as $50 per month. We also accept stand-alone donations in any amount. To learn more about the Home, go to: www.goodshepherdhome.org
Here is a report from Aben Cistus, who grew up at the home and founded the ACT Foundation to bring technology training to the orphaned children of Cameroon: "We're beyond thrilled to announce that ACT Foundation has emerged as the WINNER of the prestigious Cameroon Heroes Impact Award!

This recognition is a testament to our tireless efforts to drive positive changes and make a lasting impact on our community. We're honored to be part of a movement that celebrates heroes who are dedicated to creating a better world.

A huge thank you to our team, partners, and supporters who have been instrumental in our journey. We couldn't have done it without you! Let's continue to strive for excellence and make a difference in the lives of those around us!"

Dr. Akwa Gilberto (R) with volunteers
Dr. Akwa Gilberto, who was the first child ever received at the Good Shepherd  Home and is now a medical doctor, gives this report from his Mother Jane Legacy Foundation (MJLF): “We planned to do a lot this 2025 if God permits, but we are limited due to lack of funds. This year we hope to carry out 8 interventions in 8 different localities in the conflict hit zones of the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon. With what we have we can barely send the children to School.
Lidwine, a young formerly homeless mother helped by MJLF, will be taking her higher national diploma (HND)in Midwifery this year and she'll be defending her thesis next month, Ransom, also helped by MJLF, will be taking his final exam in secondary school next year, this achievement gladdens our hearts a lot in seeing all these children succeed. Mother Jane Legacy Foundation is pleading with its friends and partners for assistance, so we continue doing what we do. I know we are not alone in this as we know help will come."

If you'd like to donate to the Good Shepherd Home, ACT, or the Mother Jane Legacy Foundation, please email [email protected].

MANSION IN MAY – May 1-31, 2025
Picture
We Sisters are very glad to be partnering once again with Mansion in May, the signature fundraiser for the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC). This year’s designer showcase mansion is Wildfair in Chester, NJ, and we will be providing parking for the event on our St. John Baptist School property. Since 1974, Mansion in May has hosted 20 events that amassed nearly 14 million dollars, significantly enriching the programs and infrastructure of Morristown Medical Center.

VOLUNTEER DAY AT THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY THE VIRGIN
On February 13, Sister Pamela and Sister Monica Clare joined a group of Penguin/Random House staff members for a volunteer day at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in New York City. Our group folded t-shirts for the Neighbors in Need ministry, which provides clothing, toiletries, and other items for poor and unhoused residents of the Times Square neighborhood.

The ministry was started during Sister Monica’s time at St. Mary’s (2015-2018) and has continued under the able leadership of brothers from the Society of St. Francis and then several St. Mary’s parishioners. CSJB had a branch house at St. Mary’s for eleven years, and we still maintain close ties to the parish and to the Diocese of New York, where our first American ministry began in 1874.

Numbers for the volunteer day are:
  • 264 shirts folded

  • 10 volunteers from Penguin Random House

  • 2 sisters from the Community of Saint John Baptist

  • 2 Saint Marians

Many thanks to Penguin/Random House and to Grace Mudd, Marie Rosseels, and Mary Jane Boland for putting this volunteer day together.

CSJB POSTULANCY
Last November we welcomed two postulants to try their vocations at CSJB. At the end of January it was mutually decided that one of the postulants, Diana Baudelaire, should leave CSJB and discern her vocation elsewhere. We are grateful for our time with Diana, we wish her all the best, and we keep her in our prayers as she determines her next steps.

If you are curious about the process of becoming a Sister, CLICK HERE to see our website’s information.

CSJB KNITTING MINISTRY
Picture
Beautiful knitted items made by CSJB Associates Jan Paxton and the Rev. John Rollins
Our knitting ministry is an easy way to help people experiencing homelessness. We knit hats, scarves, and lap blankets year-round to donate to the Hope One van which provides mobile services to unhoused addicts in Morris County, and we invite all our friends to help. We do not require any specific patterns, so feel free to be creative.

If you’d like to help with our Knitting Ministry, please email Sister Monica Clare at [email protected]. We can even provide yarn!

THE EPIPHANY PARTY
Picture
Singing hymns with our Associates, Oblates, and friends at the Epiphany party.
Many thanks to all our friends, Associates, and Oblates who attended our annual Epiphany Party on January 5. We all enjoyed Vespers, reception of Associates, a hymn sing, and delicious dishes – many of which were brought by our guests.

Special thanks to Alison Seiner Brown of All Saints Millington for playing piano for us!

RAISING THE ROOF AT ST. MARGUERITE’S
Picture
St. Marguerite's Retreat House was built in 1908.
Would you like to help us raise the roof? Believe it or not, the beautiful blue slate roof of St. Marguerite’s retreat house is now 117 years old, and it is in an advanced state of disrepair. Our main Capital Campaign goal for 2025 is to raise enough funds to replace the roof within the historical landmark requirements.

The estimated cost of replacing the roof is $500,000. So far, we have raised $45,569 towards our goal. If you would like to contribute towards the preservation of this sacred space that welcomes hundreds of guests each year, please email [email protected].

THE CSJB GARDEN OF HOPE
Picture
Would you like to help with the issue of food insecurity? Our Garden of Hope produces between 800 and 1,000 pounds of fresh vegetables  for local food pantries every year.

The Garden of Hope is seeking volunteer groups or individuals for a number of tasks and projects. The commitment can be a one-time event or on-going seasonal gardening. Near term project needs include a group to assemble 4 raised trugs for the accessible garden area and spring bed preparation which includes fresh compost augmentation.

RING OUT FOR EARTH
Picture
The Community of St John the Baptist and Mendham InterChurch invites every parish, mission, school, and institution to ring bells, pray, or meditate for 427 seconds (7:07 minutes) on Earth Day Tuesday, April 22, and/or the following Sunday, April 27 at your organization or at home as a call for the urgent need to care for God's creation as the global atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration has reached 427 parts per million (ppm) as measured by the Keeling Curve; a level unprecedented in all of human history. CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels is the human-caused pollution responsible for blanketing and warming the planet.

CSJB ASSOCIATES AND OBLATES
Picture
The Rev. George Dredden (L) and the Rev. Paul Keene (R) were received as CSJB Associates at Vespers before the Epiphany party.

The Day Retreat for CSJB Oblates will take place at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Mendham on Saturday March 8, from 9am - 3pm. The Retreat Leader is Sister Deborah Francis, and she will guide the Oblates in using icons for prayer and reflection. Annual Oblate vow renewals, led by Sister Monica Clare, will take place at noonday prayer during the retreat.

The cost of the retreat is $50. Please bring cash or a check made out to "Cash" to the retreat. The Rev. Lorna Erixson will provide coffee and bagels for the morning, and there will be sandwiches for lunch.

Please RSVP to [email protected] on whether or not you will be attending, and also let her know your dietary restrictions, if any.

Remember to wear your Oblate shirts - for a group photo ;-)

If you'd like information on becoming a CSJB Associate or Oblate, please contact Sister Monica Clare at [email protected].

ST. JOHN BAPTIST SCHOOL ALUMNAE
On January 19, 2025, SJBS Alumna Mary Ann Renn and her husband the Rev. Wade Renn held a triple celebration for Wade’s 90th birthday, his 60th ordination anniversary, and Mary Ann and Wade’s 55th wedding anniversary.

We Sisters were supposed to attend, but the icy weather prevented us from driving. Mary Ann was very kind to send us photos and a bulletin of the event. We are so grateful to Mary Ann and Wade for all their years of kindness and friendship!

TO SUPPORT OUR GENERAL FUND
Because the pandemic suspended our ministry of hospitality for 19 months we, like many nonprofits, are still having a very difficult time covering our monthly operating costs.

We thank all our generous friends, Associates, Oblates, and benefactors who generously give to CSJB to keep Mother Harriet Monsell's dreams alive.

YOUR LEGACY FOR CSJB
Picture
Sisters in the Convent chapel with the Rt. Rev. Mary Glasspool
The majority of our buildings, chapel furnishings, Convent and Retreat House furnishings, and ongoing ministry funds were made possible through legacies.

It is mainly through the kindness of legacy donors who believed in our mission that we have carried forward the plans of the Holy Spirit for our Community from 1852 to the present time. The restoration of the Convent in 1960 was made possible by a legacy gift. Before that gift, the Sisters lived at St. Marguerite's for ten years because the Convent repairs were too expensive to undertake.
Many thanks to all the kind people who have expressed interest in being CSJB Legacy donors. Our promise to you is that your legacy will continue God's work.
