"In the tender compassion
of our God,
the dawn
from on high
shall break upon us.”
Luke 1:78, the Song of Zechariah
(Sung by the Sisters every morning at Lauds.)

This December, we send our prayers and best wishes to all of you as we wait in hope for the blessings of Christmas and the New Year.

2020 has been difficult for so many of us, but we are a people of hope. We stand steadfast in faith and prayer, and we trust that our loving God will bring us through this time of trial and onward to better things.
PictureSister Victoria Michelle (R) with the Rev. Margaret Otterburn, preparing meals for residents at Homeless Solutions in Randolph.
We pray especially for healthcare workers who bravely serve on the front lines of the pandemic, for the poor who are struggling to survive, for the oppressed who have been severely impacted, and for all those who struggle with loneliness and emotional distress at this time of year. During this especially difficult holiday season, we have set a special intention to reach out by phone, email, letter, and Christmas card to those who will be alone for the holidays. Through our ministry of spiritual direction and our socially-distanced ministry of hospitality, we hope to keep all our loved ones in our circle of love and fellowship as we walk together into a bright and hopeful New Year.

The hymn sing at our Epiphany party, January 2019
Speaking of fellowship – are you coming to our Zoom Epiphany party? This virtual event on January 3 from 5-7 PM Eastern time will include an hour of hymn singing and then a time for socializing afterward. The Epiphany party has been held for many years and it’s one of our ways of saying thank you to all the people who support CSJB through prayers, gifts, time, and talent. To register, just email Sister Monica at srmc@csjb.org and a link to the “Zoom Room” will be emailed to you two or three days before the event. Our hymn sing will happen with all the guests muted due to different Wi-Fi signals causing a Zoom cacophony of timing delays. The Sisters will lead the singing, unmuted, with Sister Margo Elizabeth playing the flute. Please feel free to send us your hymn requests at srmc@csjb.org beforehand. We also encourage our guests to wear creative Christmas attire and to show us your special holiday recipes. We look forward to seeing you all online and we especially look forward to seeing you in person once the world is safe for social gatherings again.

Many thanks to the Borough of Mendham and Robinson Drug & Compounding for choosing our parking lot at the former St. John Baptist School as the site for free COVID testing for Mendham residents on December 21. Hundreds of local people showed up for the drive-through rapid testing, which gives results within 36-48 hours.

Thanks to Mayor Christine Glassner for allowing us to do our small part for public health and safety.

If you are looking for ways to volunteer in the fight against COVID, you can find opportunities at Idealist.org. Just CLICK HERE and enter your location.

On the evening of December 21, CSJB partnered with local faith leaders to provide a “Service of the Longest Night” on Zoom. This beautiful service of lessons and prayers was compiled by Brookside UCC pastor Nicolette Siragusa, and it is part of an effort by the wider spiritual community to provide comfort and support for those who find the holiday season difficult or stressful. Sister Monica Clare and Sister Linda Clare helped lead the service along with St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Rector Lorna Erixson, Hilltop Presbyterian Church Pastor Alison Paden, and Colleen Peterson of Grace Lutheran Church. Amy Southerland from Brookside Church provided music along with guest musicians and choirs from other congregations. The Interchurch Committee of the Mendhams will be planning more of these inspirational community-building events in the coming year. A video of the service can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/LWek8_nVJrc

PictureChildren at the Good Shepherd Home in Cameroon, West Africa
Sister Jane Mankaa at the Good Shepherd Home in Cameroon, West Africa, says:
“We are preparing to celebrate Christmas this week.
The children studying outside the Good Shepherd Home are gradually coming home for the holidays. Those studying at Good Shepherd Academy are all home already. Sister Mary Lynne would be happy to know that Neba Richard took the 1st position with an average of 17.5 in his class. Sister Mary Lynne during one of her visits welcomed Richard when he was just two months old. He is doing very well in school and at home. All the 16 Children from the Home who are attending Good Shepherd Academy did extremely well in their exams. This shows how much they have been longing for school after a period of 4 good years without school. It has not been easy to keep children at home for these number of years. We just had to brave it and decided to send the children this year to school. Please keep us in your prayers. We are equally very happy to have Cistus home for the holidays. He has not been able to come home for the past 4 years. Cistus is one of the children in the Home and he is studying Petroleum at Covenant University in Nigeria. The Community of sisters remains small but very active. Prayer is still our priority. It is in prayers that we gather the strength for our many activities. It is prayer that we remember all of you before God as we thank Him for blessing us with such wonderful people like you.  It is in prayer that we remain United with the rest of the Body of Christ.  The sisters and the children wish you All a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. We believe it will be a good year for all of us. We remain United in Christ’s Love.
Yours in Christ. - Sr. Jane”

We are deeply grateful to the generous people who have contributed to our appeal for the Home and who provided sponsorships for the children’s’ shoes, clothing, and food for Christmas. If you’d like to help the children of the Good Shepherd Home, CLICK here for more information or email gsh@csjb.org.

The Bell Choir of the Church of the Messiah in Chester included some of the lovely tunes they recorded on our cloister in their annual Christmas concert. Laura Craig, Music Director at the Church of the Messiah, says “We hope that you enjoy this Christmas Concert of favorite hymns and tunes. We are so grateful to the sisters of the Community of St. John Baptist for the use of their covered archway - you probably won't be able to tell that those recordings were made on a day of heavy rain!” The concert can be viewed by clicking the image on the right to start the video.

Sister Victoria Michelle is looking forward to leading a Zoom retreat on Feb. 13 from 1-3 PM EST entitled "Knowing Who You Are in Christ."  The retreat will take a look through scripture to see how Christ defines us, and Sister Victoria Michelle says "Whatever your present circumstances may be, my earnest prayer is that somehow in this time together you can discover how amazing your life in Christ is meant to be! May you experience God doing in you and through you what only God can do.”  The cost of the retreat is $20. To register, please contact  CSJB Associate Philip Muniz at  philip.muniz@gmail.com to register and be sure to place the words “CSJB Valentine Retreat” in the email subject line.

Sister Victoria Michelle has also been preaching monthly at the Church of the Messiah, volunteering at the thrift shop there, cooking meals for the residents at Homeless Solutions in Randolph, and this month she also volunteered at the Festival of Trees in Chester which benefits the Senior Resource Center.
CSJB ASSOCIATE/OBLATE NEWS
PictureThe Rev. Ellen Kohn-Perry (center) with the Rev. Tim Carr (L) and the Rev. Ron Young in 2013.
CSJB Associate and St. John Baptist School alumna Ellen Kohn-Perry recently celebrated a joyous anniversary. Ellen says, “On December 14th, 2013 I was ordained to the Priesthood at Christ Church, Short Hills in the middle of a snow and ice storm. A blessed day! I had the gift of sharing that rite of passage with two wonderful friends, among others, Tim Carr and Ron Young. We were ordained to the Deaconate together six months earlier.” Ellen is Assistant Rector at St. Paul’s Chatham and in non-COVID times she serves CSJB as a guest celebrant at our daily mass. She is also a member of our St. John Baptist School Board. We give thanks for Ellen and her many ministries.

Mary Ann Renn is another Associate who is also a St. John Baptist alumna. She recently gifted us with almost 200 photos she took during her visit to the Good Shepherd Mission to the Navajo in Fort Defiance, Arizona, in 1967. Several of our Sisters served at the Mission around that time, and Mary Anne’s photos are not only a walk down memory lane for our Sisters, but they provide an invaluable historical record.

Longtime CSJB Associate Kathleen Shea Aregood sent us a wonderful video (click on the image at right) of holiday greetings and even gave us a tour of her creative workspace.

Thank you, Kathleen. It's so great to see you.  We look forward to the time when we can see you IN PERSON!
ST. JOHN BAPTIST SCHOOL NEWS
Picture
Betty Bergman with her husband of 71 years, Bill Bergman, who passed away in 2016.
We note with sadness the passing of  Betty Bergman, who died at the age of 96 on December 12, 2020. Betty taught and coached sports at the St. John Baptist School and was the mother of Willard Bergman, Esq, who serves on our St. John Baptist School Board. Betty died at home, surrounded by her family. She was a Mendham resident, teacher, and coach and a longtime member of our St. John Baptist School Board. She also served as a lifeguard at Holiday Hill Camp which was held for many years on the St. John Baptist School grounds. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to the Mendham Volunteer Fire Department or the Hilltop Presbyterian Church.

OUR SISTERS IN ENGLAND
Sister Jane Olive, Sister Anne, and Sister Mary Stephen are now settled into St. Mary’s Convent and Nursing Home in Chiswick, and they and the Rt. Rev. Alastair Redfern are continuing to work with the Clewer Initiative - the ministry they founded to fight human trafficking. The Clewer Initiative is currently producing five hard-hitting mini-films and an accompanying devotional course for Lent 2021. Entitled Women in the Shadows, they are focusing on the suffering facing women and girls who are trapped in sexual exploitation, forced labor, and county lines drug smuggling and the ways in which different organizations are supporting and helping victims and survivors. Sister Monica Clare is also working with Bishop Redfern on a series of podcasts about how the work of our Mother Foundress Harriet Monsell continues to inspire the ministries today.

OUR ETSY SHOP IS LIVE!
We had hoped to have our Etsy Nun Better Shop ready in time for Christmas shopping, but the process of photographing the handmade jewelry, writing the detailed descriptions, and putting the items on the site has taken much longer than we thought. You may visit our shop by clicking HERE to see the beautiful items we've uploaded so far. Many more will be added gradually. Thank you so much to Sister Mary Lynne, Sister Suzanne Elizabeth, Sister Victoria Michelle, several of our friends, and our Retreat House Manager Brad Kalos for putting this shop together.
CALLING ALL SNAILS
We’re collecting snail mail addresses and any other contact information you’d like to send us so that we can keep our contact list up to date. Our recent mailing resulted in quite a few returned envelopes, so we’d like to make sure our friends receive all our communications. Please email your current address, email, and phone number to office@csjb even if you think we already have it. Knowing us, we probably don’t! Thank you.

TO SUPPORT OUR GENERAL FUND
We Sisters of CSJB look forward to the day when we can reopen our ministry of hospitality and welcome hundreds of people per year to our Retreat House and the Convent as we have always done in the past. Until then, like many nonprofits, we are having a very difficult time covering our monthly operating costs after nearly seven months with no income. If you'd like to help us continue our ministries, please consider making a gift to our general fund through our new online Paypal portal:
https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/CommunityofStJohnBap

The restoration of the Convent in 1960 was made possible by a legacy gift. Before that gift, the Sisters lived at St. Marguerite's for ten years because the Convent repairs were too expensive to undertake.

YOUR LEGACY
PictureThe lich gate at the CSJB cemetery after the snowstorm.
Would you like to include CSJB in your estate planning?
If you’d like information on how to arrange a legacy gift, please email Sister Monica Clare at srmc@csjb.org or call 973-543-4641 ext. 2.

The majority of our buildings, chapel furnishings, Convent and Retreat House furnishings, and ongoing ministry funds were made possible through legacies. It is mainly through the kindness of legacy givers who believed in our mission that we have carried forward the plans of the Holy Spirit for our Community from 1852 to the present time.

Your planned giving would help to ensure that the dreams of our Mother Foundress, to continually address "the needs of the day," will live on into the future. We welcome gifts for specific purposes and ministries, for our Capital Campaign to restore and repair our sacred space, or for the general operating fund of the Convent and Retreat House where we welcome an average of 2,000 visitors per year.

Our Diocese, along with the Episcopal Church Foundation, provides expert legal and financial guidance to guide you through the process of the many ways of making a planned gift. Please contact Sister Monica at srmc@csjb.org or call 973-543-4641 ext. 2 if you’d like to find out more
