HISTORY OF THE
St. John Baptist School The Community of St. John Baptist, founded in Windsor, England in 1852, began with works of mercy to rescue women and girls from the urban social problems created by the Industrial Revolution. Sisters founded and ran dozens of orphanages, hospitals, and schools among many other ministries.
The American branch of CSJB was founded in New York City in 1874 to serve impoverished immigrants on New York's Lower East Side. Over the years our ministries have included a Mission House, the founding of a church in Manhattan, homes for girls, a convalescent hospital, orphanages and schools. St. John Baptist School was founded in New York City on Stuyvesant Square in 1880, and moved to a rented property in Mendham NJ in 1915. By 1929 the Sisters had raised enough funds to build a permanent school building on the Convent property. The school operated until 1983. |
