ORDINATION OF OUR SISTER TO THE PRIESTHOOD

​On June 20, our Community celebrated the ordination of Sister Monica Clare to the priesthood in the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. The Rt. Rev. Carlye J. Hughes, 11th Bishop of Newark, was our celebrant and preacher and we were overjoyed that the event was so well attended.

We are grateful to all our friends, Associates, and Oblates for being with us to celebrate this joyous occasion, and we appreciate all the prayers of those who could not be present. We also give special thanks to the generous donors who contributed towards the costs of the event and to our ministries.

Sister Monica Clare is the third Sister to be ordained as a priest in our Community. Sister Barbara Jean was the first and Sister Eleanor Francis was the second. Priest/monks have always been part of religious life since the beginning, and now our women’s communities are gradually following this tradition with priest/nuns.

We recently received this good news from Aben Cistus, who grew up at the Good Shepherd Home and is now a petroleum engineer who teaches technical skills to orphans through his ACT Foundation:

“As part of our annual tradition, the ACT Foundation was honored to join the June 5, 2026, graduation ceremony and closing assembly at Redeemer Nursery and Primary School, the home school of the children from Good Shepherd Home.

The celebration was filled with joy as we recognized and rewarded pupils for their outstanding achievements throughout the academic year. Awards were presented to the top-performing student in each class, along with special recognition for punctuality, exemplary conduct, and moral excellence.

SISTER MARGO ELIZABETH'S 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF PROFESSION

On May 31, we all celebrated the 30th anniversary of Sister Margo Elizabeth's Life Profession. Her time as a Life Professed Sister has been 30 years, but her time at CSJB actually began 35 years ago when she was received as a Postulant on Jan. 6, 1991, then clothed as a Novice May 31, 1991. She was First Professed on May 26, 1993, and her Life Profession was three years later.

Sister has been leading Celtic Journeys to holy places in Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, and England for 27 years. She has also authored two books: Sometimes a Star and Not Just an Ordinary Pony.  (Click on the titles for links to Amazon) Sister Margo Elizabeth also serves as a spiritual director and retreat leader, and she is a former professional flutist, so she adds her musical talents to our worship.

ST. MARGUERITE’S RETREAT HOUSE

This spring, our 27-bedroom retreat house welcomed groups from all different walks of life, including St. James Church NYC, The Peace We Crave, Interweave, St. Martin Men’s Group, Order of the Ascension, St. Michael’s Church NYC, and the Church of the Ascension in Brooklyn.

We are also celebrating the unexpectedly early achievement of our fundraising goal to replace St. Marguerite’s 117-year-old blue slate roof!

​Thanks to an extremely generous anonymous donor, as well as large gifts from friends like CSJB Associate Margaret Dohnalek, we reached our goal of $500,000 years earlier than we expected.

Our experts tell us this happened just in time, as the roof is quickly approaching a critical stage of deterioration. We cannot possibly thank our donors enough for your support. You have helped preserve a landmarked architectural treasure that shelters over 2,000 guests every year.

We also have a special prayer request to all our friends: Our retreat house cook, Roger Vreeland, suffered a heart attack on Friday, June 26. He is currently recovering well, but he can use all the prayers he can get. Please pray for his quick recovery and for comfort and strength to all who love him. Roger is not only a truly gifted cook, but he is also a deeply kind and generous person.

CELTIC JOURNEYS IRELAND

This year’s Celtic Journey through Ireland was a memorable pilgrimage filled with ancient sacred sites, beautiful landscapes, and moments of deep peace. 

The journey began on May 14 in Dublin with visits to St. Patrick's Cathedral and Trinity College's Book of Kells before continuing to Glendalough. There, the group spent two days exploring St. Kevin's sixth-century monastic settlement, walking woodland trails, and embracing the serenity of one of Ireland's holiest places.

The pilgrimage then led to Kildare and the great monastic city of Clonmacnoise before the group settled into the charming town of Westport. Highlights included Croagh Patrick, Ireland's Holy Mountain, Ballintubber Abbey, and the stunning beauty of Kylemore Abbey, followed by travel through the rugged landscapes of Connemara and the limestone wonder of the Burren.

The travelers continued on to Corcomroe Abbey, the ancient Poulnabrone Dolmen, and the majestic Cliffs of Moher before crossing the River Shannon to Killarney. From there, the group explored the colorful town of Dingle, visited the beautifully preserved Gallarus Oratory, and enjoyed a memorable drive along the Ring of Kerry, including a stop at the ancient Skellig Experience.

The final day included Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, where Ireland's rich heritage came vividly to life, providing a fitting conclusion to an unforgettable spiritual journey.

As the pilgrimage ended, participants returned home carrying not only cherished memories of Ireland's beauty and warm hospitality, but also a renewed appreciation for its rich Celtic Christian heritage and the sacred places that continue to inspire pilgrims from around the world.

Sister Margo Elizabeth has been leading groups to sacred places in Ireland, Scotland, and the UK since 1999, and the journeys are so popular that many of the participants choose to sign up to go multiple times.

Only a few months ago, we put out an appeal to help us purchase new chairs for our refectory, and we were amazed to see that the money was raised so quickly! Many, many thanks to all of you who sent in donations towards the chairs.

​Our meals are an important part of our ministry of hospitality, and our old chairs served us well for nearly 25 years. Because of your generosity, we now have comfortable, sturdy new ones that will serve our guests for many years to come.
 
The chairs look so nice in the refectory, and they are MUCH more comfortable.

THE CSJB GARDEN OF HOPE

​Our Garden of Hope at CSJB is maintained by faithful volunteers, and it provides between 800 and 1,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food pantries and senior housing each year. 

Sister Victoria Michelle recently offered a blessing over the plants growing in the Garden of Hope greenhouse. The tomato seeds were donated by longtime Church of the Messiah member Frank Homer, who recently retired from the parish’s garden ministry after decades of faithful service. The Senior Resource Center will now assume stewardship of the Messiah Community Garden.

Sister Victoria has been a dedicated supporter of the Good News Gardens movement since Bishop Curry issued the call to Creation Care. Five years ago, she was featured during the national launch of the initiative for her blessing of the Good News Gardens demonstration garden at CrossRoads.

The Garden of Hope is part of the Good News Gardens movement in the Episcopal Church, which began at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. The Good News Gardens movement is a church-wide initiative that encourages individuals, congregations, schools, monasteries, camps, and other ministries to use gardens and agricultural projects as expressions of faith. The movement combines Creation Care, evangelism, and hunger relief by growing food, caring for the earth, and sharing the harvest with neighbors in need.

The Garden of Hope grows vegetables and herbs along with flowers including: Pink yarrow, borage, red asparus long bean, vetch, eastern blue star.  Vetch is a cover crop that fixes nitrogen.

OUR BOY SCOUT TROOP 130

NJ Assemblywoman Aura Dunn with Eagle Scout Matthew Eberhart

Congratulations to Matthew Eberhart on earning the rank of Eagle Scout! Boy Scout Troop 130, which was chartered by CSJB, recognized Matthew on April 19 as its newest Eagle Scout. He has served in several leadership roles, from Librarian to Senior Patrol Leader.

​He continues to represent the troop in the Order of the Arrow, and he has participated in multiple high-adventure trips. Matthew is looking forward to attending the National Jamboree next summer. 

In April, Troop 130 also thanked outgoing Scoutmaster Lawrence Morris for more than 1,100 days of dedicated service. Dave Riley was then welcomed as the new Scoutmaster, and all the Scouts look forward to supporting him as he leads the troop.

On June 20, the troop also assisted with parking for the diocesan ordination event here at the Convent. Scouts also regularly help us with projects around our campus.

AN EXCITING RETREAT AT ST. MARGUERITE’S NOVEMBER 19-21

​Leaders: Dr. Vladimir Miscovic, Ph.D. and The Rev. Canon Masud Ibn Syedullah, TSSF
This retreat integrates contemplative neuroscience, human psychology, and the ancient wisdom of the Christian tradition to explore the daily cultivation of "loving Presence". We will move beyond the perceived divide between science and spirituality by presenting scientifically informed models of the whole human being encompassing the traditional domains of body, soul, and Spirit. Through a mix of conceptual presentations and experiential practices—including contemplative sessions, small group work, and personal reflection—retreatants will discover how age-old meditative traditions and modern insights converge to bring life-giving energy and wisdom to their daily lives.

​Dr. Vladimir Miskovic, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist, former professor of psychology, and former novice monk. He is the author of Dreaming Reality (Harvard University Press) and currently investigates the neurological and psychological effects of contemplative practice at the Non-Duality Institute in Woodstock, NY. 

Vladimir has offered guest lectures and presentations on the psychosomatic and psychospiritual models of contemplative practice at institutions including Brown University, The Catholic University of America, Trinity College at the University of Toronto, and Western Washington University, as well as various private organizations. Vladimir weaves together the latest findings in contemplative neuroscience and psychology with the centuries-old wisdom of the Christian tradition and other sacred paths. His work is dedicated to fostering a dynamic, non-reductive understanding of the whole human being, providing a grounded yet transformative vision for navigating the modern world.

The Rev. Canon Masud Ibn Syedullah, TSSF is a priest of the Diocese of New York; Founder and Director of Roots & Branches: Programs for Spiritual Growth (www.roots-branches.org); has served as Interim Canon for Ministry, and continues to serve as a resource for ministry formation in the Diocese of New York; is President of the National Association of Episcopal Christian Communities; and is a professed member of the Third Order, Society of Saint Francis, a Christian Community in the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion. For more than forty-five years, Masud has created and led programs of contemplative practice nationally and internationally. With a professional background in music, Masud weaves the elements of the arts through all of his work to address and integrate the various dimensions of our humanity. Furthermore, although Masud is firmly rooted in Christian faith and practice, he draws upon some of the resources of the Universal Wisdom and spiritual practices of the world’s religious traditions.

Cost per retreatant: $450.00 (two nights), which includes the basic convent's request of $125.00 per night, plus compensation for the two presenters.

A RETREAT AT ST. BART’S, NYC

Sister Monica Clare served as a guest facilitator at St. Bart’s Church in New York City on May 15-16 as part of their Pilgrims and Pathfinders retreat weekend.

​She also co-hosted the St. Bart’s Sunday Forum with Bishop Allen K. Shin. The Forum was followed by a Sunday Eucharist, which included the confirmation, reception, or reaffirmation of faith of 26 individuals.

Our Community has had a long and fruitful connection with the Diocese of New York since our Sisters began their ministry in New York City in 1874. Our Mother House was located in Manhattan for over 40 years before it was moved to Mendham.

​CSJB ASSOCIATES AND OBLATES

We Sisters welcomed four new CSJB Associates at our evening Eucharist on June 23, the eve of the Feast of St. John Baptist. Many thanks to the Rev. Mark Collins, Kathy Lacouture, Ruth Najemian, and Sonia Sequiera for joining our community of prayer and service.

The Associates will gather for a retreat in the fall, on November 7, from 10 AM to Noon. The retreat theme is “Sharing our Spiritual Resources” and will be facilitated by Sister Monica Clare. Attendees will share their own hymns, poems, practices, books, and anything else that brings them closer to God. All participants are invited to bring one special thing/idea/activity to share with the group. CSJB Associate Marianna Klaiman will also give a tour of the Convent’s collection of ecclesiastical embroidery treasures.

Garland Talmadge Riggs (SJBS ’61) passed away on May 22. She will be deeply missed by the many people who love her, including her Class of 1961 classmates who have remained close.

The majority of our buildings, chapel furnishings, Convent and Retreat House furnishings, and ongoing ministry funds were made possible through legacies.

​It is mainly through the kindness of legacy donors who believed in our mission that we have carried forward the plans of the Holy Spirit for our Community from 1852 to the present time. The restoration of the Convent in 1960 was made possible by a legacy gift. Before that gift, the Sisters lived at St. Marguerite's for ten years because the Convent repairs were too expensive to undertake.
